The Flame Nebula is located about 1,400 light years from Earth near the easternmost star in Orion's Belt, Alnitak. This marvelous emission nebula is about 15 light years across and it contains a cluster of hundreds of young stars at its center. X-ray (Chandra): NASA, CXC, PSU/K.Getman, E.Feigelson, M.Kuhn & the MYStIX team; Infrared (Spitzer): NASA, JPL-Caltech

An image of Stephan's Quintet captured by Gemini North reveals a group of interacting galaxies located nearly 300 million light years from us. However, the galaxy NGC 7320 (top-centre) is about 8 times closer (Credit: International Gemini Observatory/NOIRLab/NSF/AURA)

One of the most luminous stars in the Andromeda Galaxy pulled off the ultimate cosmic disappearing act — and astronomers have finally cracked the mystery.Meet M31-2014-DS1, a massive hydrogen-depleted supergiant located about 2.5 million light-years away in our neighboring spiral galaxy. Instead of ending its life in a blaze of glory with a supernova explosion, this star quietly imploded. Its core succumbed to gravity and collapsed directly into a stellar-mass black hole, vanishing from view without so much as a dramatic bang.A team led by Kishalay De (formerly at the Simons Foundation's Flatiron Institute, now at Columbia University) pieced together the drama using more than a decade of archival data from NASA's NEOWISE infrared telescope, plus observations from various ground- and space-based instruments spanning 2005 to 2023.The clues unfolded like this:Starting in 2014, the star began steadily brightening in mid-infrared light — a sign of intense activity, possibly as its outer layers heated up and shed material. By 2016, its brightness plunged sharply. From 2017 to 2022, it faded dramatically in optical (visible) light by a factor of more than 10,000, becoming completely undetectable by 2023. Yet a faint infrared glow lingers — the ghostly signature of dust and ejected outer layers that were flung outward rather than fully consumed. What made this collapse so stealthy? Convection deep inside the dying star imparted enough angular momentum to the outer envelope that much of the material spiraled around the newborn black hole instead of plunging straight in. The black hole fed slowly over years or decades, not in a sudden gulp.In the end, only about 1% of the star's outer envelope actually fell into the black hole. The rest escaped as dust and gas, creating that persistent faint glow that could remain detectable for decades — even to powerful observatories like the James Webb Space Telescope. This wasn't a one-off freak occurrence. The researchers revisited an earlier candidate, NGC 6946-BH1 (in a galaxy about 25 million light-years away), and confirmed it followed the same quiet "failed supernova" pattern. What was once thought to be rare oddities now point to an entire class of massive stars that skip the explosive finale and simply fade into black holes.De captured the awe perfectly: “This star used to be one of the most luminous stars in the Andromeda Galaxy, and now it was nowhere to be seen. Imagine if Betelgeuse suddenly disappeared — everybody would lose their minds!”Thanks to this discovery, we're getting our clearest glimpse yet into one of the universe's most elusive processes: the silent birth of stellar-mass black holes. Research Paper De et al., "Disappearance of a massive star in the Andromeda Galaxy due to formation of a black hole," Science (published February 12, 2026).

Please help me honor Specialist Brittany Bria Gordon, a 24-year-old U.S. Army intelligence analyst, from Florida, KIA on October 13, 2012, in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. On her first deployment she volunteered for a site survey mission with Afghan forces when a s*icide bomber detonated an IED, taking her life along with a CIA officer and four Afghans. Heroes like Brittany remind us of the real cost of freedom.
