L’Europa è il nostro futuro. E’ il futuro per la Pace e Stabilità. Nata dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale per prevenire conflitti, l'UE mantiene la stabilità grazie all'integrazione economica e politica, e ci potrà garantire sicurezza collettiva se costruiremo la difesa comune europea. L'Europa è il più grande blocco commerciale al mondo per scambio di beni e servizi, offrendo prosperità economica. L’Europa è lo spazio più ampio al mondo sul tema dei Diritti: noi cittadini europei godiamo di diritti tutelati, inclusa la libera circolazione, il diritto al lavoro, parità di trattamento e protezione dei dati.  L’Europa sono valori comuni: democrazia, Stato di diritto, pluralismo, tolleranza e rispetto della dignità umana, L’Europa difende la libertà in un mondo complesso.  L’Europa è l’unico spazio nel quale possiamo agire su questioni che superano i confini nazionali, come il cambiamento climatico, la sicurezza, la migrazione e la cooperazione internazionale.  Come dice il motto dell’Unione Europea, siamo Uniti nella Diversità. E’ la volontà di rispettare le diverse culture, tradizioni e lingue dei paesi membri, promuovendo l'integrazione senza cancellare l'identità nazionale.  Oggi e’il giorno di tutte le cittadine e i cittadini europei, sognato dai Padri Fondatori e che ci consegna l’impegno per un futuro ancora più importante: gli Stati Uniti d’Europa!

Ricordare oggi non significa indulgere nella retorica, ma riconoscere che quella notte ha segnato un punto di svolta nella sicurezza europea e nella consapevolezza delle nostre fragilità. A distanza di dieci anni, il modo migliore per onorarne la memoria è continuare a difendere la libertà, la democrazia e la sicurezza dei cittadini, senza abbassare la guardia di fronte a chi vuole colpire i nostri valori
