A great listen, as always 👌- I particularly like the message for pats/parents - re some people unpredictability needing lots and lots of adrenaline to stabilise (safe delivery of IV) ❗️so hospital/999 vital❗️A 🔑 take home for those at risk of #Anaphylaxis @IFANdotIE

Is it safe to take antihistamines long term?🤔Many of Prof. @DrAdamFox patients rely on #antihistamines for extended periods, whether for nasal issues like rhinitis or conditions like chronic urticaria. Understandably, parents will often ask about the long-term safety of these medications – it is therefore important that you are taking the right type of antihistamines.   Some key things to know and be aware of: ❌There are concerns regarding the long-term safety of first-generation antihistamines, like Piriton and Chlorpheniramine so these should be avoided as long term treatment ✔️Second-generation antihistamines, including Cetirizine, Loratadine, and Fexofenadine, have an excellent long-term safety record. 👉Extensive evidence supports the safety of regular use of second-generation antihistamines at recommended doses over time - there's no evidence to suggest tolerance development or the need for dose escalation in children due to prolonged use. 👉However, as children grow, dosage adjustments may be necessary to maintain efficacy. Follow Prof. Fox on Instagram (DrAdamFox) for helpful videos as he shares tips and guidance on the topic of children’s allergies.
