I’m not much for social media these days, mostly using it for any significant life events… The one this weekend is I had to say goodbye to cat at the very old age of 23. I’m grateful I he was with me as long as he was & I’ll miss his presence.

I never really used his real name online, so am not in this post either. If you knew his name, it likely means we connected beyond just social media.

Observing #EarthHour and a reminder that dealing with climate change is selfish. It’s for us & our well being (& standard of living). Be selfish. Help do something to deal with climate change.

Technology dehumanizing people to lines on a spreadsheet to be denied care without even looking at them. Yay detached & de-humanized 21st century living. And despite this being pointed out, likely nothing will actually change. It’s profitable to keep things as they are:

1 million (m): 1,000,000 1 billion (b): 1,000,000,000 Three zeroes different, that’s it. But… 1 m seconds: 12 days 1 b seconds: 32 years To earn $1m in a year = $2,739/day (great living!) To earn $1b in year = $2,739,726/day (!!!) 1 b is massive. Tweet about it responsibly.

Misinformation flies so fast and spreads 10 times faster than reality. It’s a reason wonder needs to be paired with critical thinking. I don’t tweet as much b/c of how easy misinterpreting or amplifying is. Basic fact in thread: size of 1 billion (US)

And I’ll do what I can to not just hope, but actively build a better future for science & scientists in the world (though I admit what I can actively do is a drop in the bucket of what’s needed).

Anyhow, it’s likely to be a stressful near future in the startup world. I hope we can navigate this time as well as possible & I hope opportunities for scientists moving to industry/startup cos can have a brighter future in a healthy (economic) ecosystem.

This SVB thing is going to affect people I know. Startups are part of our ecosystem of experimenting & creating what’s next. It’s building industries & viable tech of the future. A lot of scientists work for startups, many as first steps out of academia. It’s opportunity.
