The conversation was an example of what the economist-in-residence programme will be: a sandbox for testing out ideas about how arts and culture create public value that our current economic frameworks fail to see. Culture is not just a sector to be subsidised. It is foundational infrastructure — for imagination, for community, for the direction of an economy itself. My three-year residency with @_TheWhitechapel will examine how public value is created, recognised and governed.
