Snake-like robots are great for tight spots like surgery or factory inspections as they can be bent in any angle by pulling strings attached to a flexible backbone. But they’re difficult to control. Managing all those individual tendons at once is just too complex. To fix this, researchers developed a "virtual actuation space (VAS)" framework to control. This lets the robot move based on two simple things: how much it bends and in what plane. It’s much faster for the computer and way more accurate. Real-world tests show errors below 1%. Unlike older setups, where moving one section messed with the rest, these sections now work independently. It makes these systems much more reliable and easier to scale. Every year, urban flooding costs billions and forces millions to search for necessities, a crisis faced by more than 500 cities. To address this, four researchers, launched AIResQ ClimSols (AIResQ), an urban resilience startup, based on years of research by the Machine Intelligence and Resilience (MIR) Lab at IITGN. The idea emerged from a request to assess flood probability for a riverfront project in Surat. After realising that academic papers are not the answer city officials look for at 2 am during heavy rain, the team built the Rain2Resilience Suite. This physics-informed AI tool predicts rainfall, tells cities where flooding will hit, how severe it will be, and which roads and infrastructure are at risk, even before the first raindrop falls. As explained by co-founder Prof Udit Bhatia, “It is like bringing together scientific models with machine learning to deliver real-time, hyperlocal flood intelligence”. However, data from AI models alone rarely inspires action. Hence, AIResQ also built the AI Resilience Command (ARC) Centre: a safe space for the common public to approach in times of need. Here, complex flood models come alive through real-time visualisation, making science legible to policymakers and communities alike. Their vision for ARC centre 2.0 includes AR-based gamified simulations that let decision-makers experience consequences before acting. Selected for the Indian government's AI Centre of Excellence ‘Make AI in India’ program, AIResQ drives urban preparedness, from Gurugram flood digital twins to Gujarat dam safety. Their story began as a simple request that turned into a mission to help turn cities from reactive to resilient, one monsoon at a time. #IITGN_RnD_Horizon #ResearchAndDevelopment #RnD #StartupSuccessStories #IITGN #IITGNStartups #StartupIndia #MakeinIndia #BharatInnovates #AICOE #FloodResilience #DeepTech #MakeAIinIndia #AI #SDG11 @EduMinOfIndia | @PIBDST | @PIB_India | @IndiaDST | @ANRFIndia

Interestingly, scientists can identify medicinal plants crucial for therapeutic and preventive purposes by observing the size, shape, and surface features of pollen under a microscope. However, even with available pollen image databases, the lack of standardised workflows and large-scale datasets makes the classification process labour-intensive and prone to human error. To address this challenge, researchers at IITGN combine high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with advanced artificial intelligence to transform pollen analysis. By capturing detailed surface features and training machine learning models on these images, the team enabled automated detection and accurate classification of pollen grains. Through the use of an established segmentation model, YOLOv11, alongside other deep-learning classification models that analyse visual data, they applied this deep-learning approach to a newly compiled dataset of SEM images from 28 medicinal plant species. They were able to evaluate its performance, while also developing an open-access resource titled MPalyn (Medicinal Pollen and Palynology SEM Database), a digital platform for broader access and analysis. This helps standardise data and support future research and model improvement. Moreover, by examining variations in pollen characteristics among closely related species, the researchers demonstrate the framework’s potential in palynology, which involves the study of microfossils of pollen and spores. This methodology can be extended to other medicinal plants, offering a valuable resource for automated analysis. Such advancements can strengthen crop research, improve allergen monitoring, support biodiversity assessments, and enhance our understanding of past environmental conditions through pollen records. The team includes Prof Subramanian Sankaranarayanan, Prof Shanmuganathan Raman, Jaidev Sanjay Khalane, and Prof Nilesh D Gawande.
