Single fathers vs single mothers. I vividly recall the experience of having a coworker that was a single mom and one that was a single dad. The single mom was never celebrated, never given grace and never given extra accommodations. I remember the animosity from people asking why she never volunteered to work the day after thanksgiving or Christmas “just” because she had a child and they felt we all had family equally important. When I worked with a single dad, they cheered on every little thing he did. He easily got a new girlfriend who picked up all the mother duties. No one judged him for not keeping his legs closed. When he was running late or called out because the kid was sick, people volunteered to cover for him. Nobody ever said he should have kept his legs closed. No one said he couldn’t raise a girl into a woman. Women signed up to stand in the gap of female guidance for the girl. So unlike single mothers, single fathers don’t have to deal with the shame from society.
