People keep calling the Odyssey and ancient Greece “Western heritage” as if they emerged from a western European or even European world. But the modern “West vs East” divide did not even exist yet. Ancient Greeks did not see themselves as “westerners.” They were one civilization among many in the interconnected eastern Mediterranean world alongside Egyptians, Phoenicians, Anatolians, Cypriots, Levantines and Mesopotamians. And the evidence for this is everywhere.

This is just projecting modern racial and civilizational ideas backwards onto antiquity. Yes, Greeks used the geographic terms “Europe” and “Asia,” but they did not mean “White Europeans” in the modern sense. Greeks themselves lived in Asia Minor for centuries and regarded Ionian Greeks there as fully Greek. Hippocrates was making an environmental theory argument about climate and political systems shaping behavior, not inventing modern racial categories. Funny enough Greek writers also usually described Persians and Egyptians through culture, customs, clothing and political systems rather than as radically different-looking peoples. Yet they often explicitly described the appearance of northern Europeans and some African populations when they considered them physically distinct. Don’t cry about this, it’s just the facts.
