💡We’re pleased to see today’s announcement from our portfolio company Lumai, reporting the first successful demonstration of full AI model inference executed entirely using optical (photonic) computing, without reliance on conventional silicon processors. While optical components have previously been explored for individual AI tasks, this is the first time a complete inference workload has been run wholly in the optical domain. It represents an important technical milestone as the AI industry grapples with the energy, cost and scalability limits of silicon‑based computing. This demonstration provides early validation that fully optical systems could support full‑model inference in practice, opening a new pathway for addressing the performance and energy challenges associated with large‑scale AI deployment. Lumai will now work with partners and prospective customers to test and validate the platform on real‑world workloads, translating this foundational capability into deployable systems. A genuine first‑of‑a‑kind result, and an encouraging step forward for next‑generation AI infrastructure.
