We have 50% fewer hospital inpatient beds nationally, and community care is insufficient to allow timely discharge for our most frail patients. I struggle to see easy solutions to this problem in the medium to long term. All the while I worry for staff and patients in the ED

14,000 avoidable deaths per year caused by patients staying in the Emergency Department for more than 12 hours. Time for a collective hospital-wide approach to tackle these harmful delays to ward admission. This is not solely Emergency Medicine’s problem to fix.
