Big Boy is the voice of Los Angeles, and one of the most genuine, compelling interviews we’ve ever had on the podcast. We get into his origin story and how he was able to turn all of L.A. into his neighborhood. Full interview w/ @BigBoy: youtube.com/watch?v=x5FEuX…

@CohenSite Good points. I also think School Impact fees need to be reduced within this buffer area to half. This would make the construction of these projects more financially feasible for the multi-bedroom units. It’s a pipe dream for now cuz it would require a change on the CA schl code

Thinking about how a “save our schools” act could work in practice…
For any public school that is at < 70% of student capacity…
- 1/4 mile walking distance
- 4 floors of height
- 50% of units need to be 3+ bedrooms
- Get an extra floor of height if at least 10% of units are reserved for public school teachers?

Where are the teachers' unions demanding an SB 79 for schools? Upzone for family housing within 1/4 of mile of neighborhood schools and you'll save at least some of them from closure.

California will lose 15.7% of its public school students by 2031. Nearly 3x the national rate. Idaho and Florida are growing.
This isn't an inevitability — it'a consequence of what happens when housing costs too much and schools stop working.

Here's where CA is growing
I'm fascinated by how many people hate CA so much they spend so much time writing about how CA stacks up or is lacking compared to their state. Why do you care if you don't live here or never want to live here?
A lot of people who live in CA wish more people would leave, then maybe real estate gets more affordable.
Yeah there's a lot of issues in CA, tell me what state doesn't have any?
But yet people still move to CA, buy or want to buy real estate in CA, start new businesses in CA or just make a lot of money in CA
There's a ton of wealth in CA. People act like CA doesn't do any business. 20% of CA GDP is tech, the rest is spread across many industries. You can focus on the business that isn't done or you can focus on what business IS growing. A lot of people are making money in CA
Be apart of it, or don't, but the people who want to be in CA focus on doing business and making money
