@CatrionaRiddel1@mtpennycook Sadly IMO the high hopes will not happen. Attempts to buy land at a low price will create massive delay. Second, blocking opposition to local change from local residents by disenfranchising their habit of objecting is too crude, too fast and will be highly contentious.
Everyone happy with the package of #planning reforms announced today? There's no doubt it's ambitious & there will be challenges but a new era for strategic planning will play a key role. Thank you @mtpennycook for listening & putting in place the 1st steps to make this happen!
@BBCPM Sound aspirations, without doubt. But how is the support of local residents to be obtained? Without it local councils will not co-operate. They have a different agenda. It is to avoid local change. This omission has suffocated new housing supply over a generation.
"We can't address the housing crisis without building at a larger than local scale."
Matthew Pennycook, Labour's new housing minister, tells #BBCPM Labour will launch a taskforce early on in The Parliament to ensure local support for the 1.5 million new homes target.
@CatrionaRiddel1 Evidence once again the system is broken. Is levelling up going to mend it? Gaining the support of residents scared of change is key. How?
@CatrionaRiddel1 Councils need to see advantages working together. Host authorities do not see any. This has to change. Can overspill councils grasp take the lead, buying up long term strategic locations?
There seems to be many LPA planners scared of working proactively with neighbours & of anything called strategic planning. Over last 12 years so many have forgotten its true value because they are bogged down in arguments about housing numbers, Green Belt & DtC. Time for change!
