Had a meeting tonight where a branch member described the 2017 GE result—the largest swing since 1945, reversing 20 years of electoral decline and breaking the government’s majority—as “catastrophic” for Labour. I find this sort of revisionism deeply alarming.

The British Left needs to wise up, because we’re heading into a period when all protest, all extraparliamentary politics, is effectively criminalised. The rules will not protect you.

We didn’t fight back. Instead, we contested internal elections; we lodged formal complaints; and we wrote disappointed letters to our MPs. We followed the rules, we went through proper channels, and none of it mattered, because they control the rules; they control the channels.

We joke about the phrase ‘stay and fight’, but it was a good principle in 2020; the problem is that the people who stayed didn’t actually do any fighting.
