What makes a great game? Attacking, drama, significance, atmosphere. Liverpool 4 Newcastle United 3 on April 3, 1996, had all of those. A game for the ages, and a lesson for this age. It had incredible attackers in Fowler, Collymore, Ferdinand and Asprilla… 1/2

Wembley DJ now playing "Things can only get better". D-Ream on. Rising sun and a sinking feeling: Japan beat a disappointing England 1-0. Seven thoughts on the whistle from Wembley… Harry 1. Wrap Kane in cotton wool. Hope he enjoys a prolific, niggle-free end of season at Bayern. England lack leadership, focus and goals without their captain and record scorer. England also missed Rice and Saka. Harry 2. Believe in Maguire. How on earth is Maguire sixth choice centre-back, according to Tuchel? Brings authority, passing from the back and a threat at corners (and pens). Header cleared off line by Sugawara. Must go to the World Cup. Play with more width, more freedom. Get the wingers to take on their full-backs, not cut inside all the time. England painfully narrow for an hour. Rashford and Bowen brought some width. Some. Express yourself. Believe in Bellingham. Injured but let’s dispel the doubts: he has to start at 10. Bellingham would have taken responsibility, imposing himself. He’s world class. If England are to progress far at the World Cup, they'll need their best players. And Bellingham is one. No more Ben White. Decent player but a divisive figure amongst England fans. Booed on, booed off. England’s hard core crowd in the Block 109 particularly vocal. England have enough alternatives at right-back (even with Tuchel’s damaging snubbing of Alexander-Arnold). Perspective. England swept through an easy qualifying campaign. But up against decent teams, Senegal (ranked 19th at the time), Uruguay (17th) and Japan (19th) they struggled. LDL. You cannot lose possession cheaply. And this was 13C, not the 23C+ across the pond. Japan looked a real team, well-organised. England didn't. Positive. Don’t panic. England lost 1-0 at Wembley (to Iceland) in their warm-up before Euro 2024 - and reached the final. #ENG

🚨 BREAKING : Jeremie Frimpong came on for Netherlands and was forced off through injury ten minutes later. Looks like it could be yet another spell on the sidelines for the Liverpool right-back… 😬

England are not in the class of France, Argentina or Spain. But they do have some exceptional talent. Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane are world class. So is John Stones - at his best. Trent Alexander-Arnold is world class - in possession. Declan Rice is having the season of his life. There are more reasons to be positive going into this tournament than negative. But England have to be bold and play to their strengths.  Imagine if England were bold and, if all fit, went into the World Cup… Pickford; Alexander-Arnold, Stones, Guehi, O’Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane.  Stones would have some covering to do of Alexander-Arnold when he raced upfield. Bellingham gets heavily scrutinised but he’s a big-game player, a winner and used to pressure at Real Madrid. He has to start. England also have an exceptional head coach in Thomas Tuchel who can make the right changes at the right time. England have a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals of the World Cup and then anything’s possible. But only if they are bold. Not gung-ho. But bold. Risk/reward. #ENG

Jamie Carragher gave 17 years of his life to Liverpool, 10 of those as vice-captain and never once looked like wearing another shirt. A proper one club man. 737 appearances, second only in the club’s history, which tells you everything about his commitment and consistency. He picked up 11 trophies along the way, was named Liverpool Player of the Season twice, and made the PFA Team of the Season once as well. Not bad for a lad who just loved defending more than anything else on the pitch. On the international stage, he won 38 caps for England during a golden generation of defenders. A genuine Liverpool legend, and let’s not forget, an outstanding defender too.

Everything rotten in Britain stems from this period. Everything. Landlord rents. Shit in the rivers. Zero work hours. No British industry. Gas, electric bills through the roof, No affordable housing. All of it.

When Marcus Rashford plays like that, unleashing his pace on opponents, racing past three Uruguayans, going on the outside, leaving Varela tackling thin air, and getting in a cross….it’s not simply a question of whether he will be in the 26 for the World Cup but in the starting XI ahead of Anthony Gordon. Needs to do it more often, of course. But the talent and pace are there. Good awareness: dropped in briefly at left-back when Spence pushed up. #ENG #ENGURU

I keep seeing Liverpool fans begging for Alonso to become Liverpool manager but I get the feeling that most of these fans aren't even old enough to remember the shitty way of how Alonso left as a player. Not for me.

Devastating for Wales. They gave everything. Pens the cruellest way to miss out. World Cup will be the poorer without Craig Bellamy, Wales and their travelling choirs. Credit to Bosnia & Herzegovina, resilient and then ruthless.
