This is the Giralda, one of the most unique and impressive bell towers in Christendom, and a result of the glorious reconquest of Seville by Saint Ferdinand. It partly features the typical structure of Almohad minarets, topped with a Christian belfry. +

Here is an extract from the essay On the Cathedral of Seville and “The Misanthrope”, written by the great Hilaire Belloc. It is of the most ingenious and beautiful insights concerning said temple and, of course, its bell tower: the fascinating Giralda.

The Metropolitan Cathedral Church of St David in Cardiff, Wales. It was originally constructed as a church in 1842, with the current building design dating to 1887, and became a cathedral in 1920. It was destroyed during WW2, and was rebuilt in 1959.

@juancege La Giralda as we nowadays know it is what Castile wanted it to be. It could’ve been destroyed by Christians but it was improved and partly kept instead. I most certainly have given proper credit to it.

@IbCathAes La Giralda is a jewel of Islamic architecture; not “a result of the glorious reconquest “. Let’s give proper credit to Spain’s shared heritage.

Finally, the Archbishop conferred upon it the invocation of Our Lady of Patronage. (Picture taken by me).

Prior to the construction of the shrine as it exists today, permission was granted on the 28th of November for the erection of a more modest monument. Later on, the statue that we see today was donated. +

Also in Plaza del Triunfo we find a small shrine dedicated to the Triumph of Our Lady of Patronage, from whom the square itself takes its name. It stands behind the Archive of the Indies and contains a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus in her arms. +

Seville was a pioneer in defending the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As early as the 17th century, the feast was already widely celebrated in the city, two centuries before it was formally defined as a dogma. +
