Happy 63rd Independence Anniversary, Mama Salone!
As a nation, we have resiliently existed through years of war, Ebola, and COVID-19. We have survived political upheavals and crises. Yet, the people of Sierra Leone continue to thrive.
We thrive for our families and our children, our beliefs, passions, and dreams, in this moment and for generations to come.
Today, we celebrate our existence. A small nation but strong and mighty.
Happy Independence Day, mama Salone.
Happy Independence from my Family to you all!.

“This is a great opportunity. WE cannot allow it to waste”
Those were the immortal words of President Julius Maada Bio when I finally informed him that I wanted leave to proceed to Harvard on further studies. I will never forget them.
He used “WE”. I was stunned. He is a Leader. He knew this was good for Sierra Leone. It was not just about me. He believes strongly in Human Capital Development and I came to him with one of the best forms of them all! He was happy and impressed. I sighed deep and sunk into the chair. It could have gone either way. Had he asked me not to proceed, I was willing to defer to another year or time. I believe in his vision for Sierra Leone. It was down to him. He took the route of the Statesman I thought he is. He didn’t let me down.
Let me take a step back and tell you how it happened. It was two weeks to the start of the program at Harvard Law School. I deliberated on what to do with the last huddle: how was I going to approach the President of Sierra Leone and tell him that, as occupants of one of the most important offices of his government, I needed to take a break go away and further develop myself at the best Univeristy in the World without creating the wrong impression or offending him - just two months after he got re-elected and wanted to deliver strongly on the “BIG FIVE” agenda? By that time, fewer than 6 people knew of my plans.
I called to see him on a personal matter and he asked that I go there that afternoon. I got there at the same time as Dr. Sengeh. I pulled him aside and informed him that I was about to ask for leave to go to Harvard. Before he could react, I was called by the State Chief of Protocol that the President was calling for me. I went in, he was, as usual, very happy to see me and we started talking about more general things. Then it got quiet and I drew air in and said “Sir, I have this opportunity to go to Harvard for 10 Months Master’s studies on scholarship and I need your perspective on what I should do. I will have opportunity to delve deeper into Anti-Corruption with the Harvard Anti-Corruption Lab, but beyond that, master the rest of the areas of the law that I had not previously focused on and also take Policy, Government and Leadership courses at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. . .
As I spoke, I pushed towards him my “unconditional offer of acceptance” and my “Scholarship award letter”. I don’t think the President heard the rest of what I was saying as he drew both letters toward him and started reading as though I was not there at all. For nearly 7 minutes, I sat and watched as he read through each letter from start to finish. The offer of acceptance was 1 page long and the Scholarship letter was 2 pages. He read through them all. It was dead quiet in the bunker. I was anxious but calm. When he finished, he looked up at me with a very serious face and said “This is a great opportunity. We cannot allow it to waste. . .” He went on about the importance of continued professional development and why this is something I should pursue and return since it’s only 10 months. He asked me who I would leave in charge of the office; I told him my deputy will do the job while am away. He consented.
The last huddle was crossed. I left the following weekend for Harvard. My mom had prayed, my friend reminded me not to get complacent but go for gold, Harvard came through with the opportunity and resources, President Bio sealed the deal. God had answered. I was at Harvard like a miracle. . .
10 months is ALREADY OVER. I went, I saw, and I will conquer! Only one more walk is left through Harvard Yard. . . the graduation Ceremony, 3 weeks from now, on May 23rd 2024.
I will be in the office on Monday to continue the People’s work! I have come with RENEWED energy and Committment in the true spirit of VERITAS. . .truth!
