It's why I refer to so many of the complainers as gaming Karens, snowflakes and tourists.
Most don't actually care about quality gaming, but merely protecting their own narrow or headcanon view of what representation should constitute, which often times appears creatively samey or boring.
Many come off as intensely entitled and annoying cretins hurting gaming discourse, and so easily propagandised by outrage merchants who get click revenue rallying their hate.
Imagine watching a single clip or few of the ending of a show instead of the entire show itself, with all the context, characterisation, build up, insight, developments etc throughout, and thinking that's enough for you to judge the shows story or the entire show lol.
No logical or well adjusted person would seek to judge narratives in art in this way. And yet that's what many of these Karens do.
It's like we have this split in gaming on social media now, where there's actual passionate gamers enjoying the high quality gameplay and design in games like SAROS, where on the opposite end we have snowflakes who reject it simply because the main character is Indian, or spoil the story for themselves and others by viewing aspects of it in an incoherent or disjointed way, which only a tourist would do.
While there may be rare instances in games where things may be overly heavy handed in terms of diversity, most of the games the Karens complain about, aren't that, and instead implementation simply reflecting aspects of the world and people around us.

Dudes swearing it’s “just about quality” and “forced politics” while throwing tantrums because the protagonist isn’t a white dude from 1998 who never challenges their worldview. You’re not mad at “DEI.” You’re mad you’re no longer the undisputed default and it shows in every meltdown. I already said some of the lazy representation stuff is absolutely dumb. That’s not the debate. The real issue killing our hobby isn’t diversity quotas. It’s the full-on commercialization of gaming. Passion is gone. Pride in craft is gone. Creativity got replaced by focus-group slop, shareholder mandates, and safe, soulless product designed to hit every demographic checkbox while saying nothing meaningful. Strip the “woke” elements out of half these flops and you’d still have mid garbage because the soul was sold to the boardroom years ago. That’s the part the outrage machine conveniently ignores while screaming about one Indian protagonist or a lesbian side character. Games used to be our weird, beautiful, chaotic hobby made by people who loved it. Now it’s just another quarterly earnings line. That’s what actually ruined it, not the fact that someone who doesn’t look like you gets to be the hero or the villain sometimes. The gaming industry is growing up, whether we like it or not. Don't buy what you don't like, support indies and smaller developers that still have passion and let's move past the lazy "DEI ruined everything" copout.

Only one of PlayStations tentpole titles feature a gay main character (Ellie in TLOU). Horizon Burning Shores it's simply a choice.
And as to why these things get included, presumably a combination of being more narratively divergent or interesting, while also being more inclusive.

@kiwitalkz I think upscaling is gonna be the key for console and pc going forward, and with upscaling they can essentially build 1080p games and have ai upscale it to 4k which in theory reduces the dev cost that’s how I see all the big company’s handle it going forward

Sony are in a tricky spot because they are essentially stuck between a rock and a hard place.
They have conditioned their audience to expect highly graphical cinematic games yet that isn't really sustainable with the cost of development as it is (and only rising)
Astro Bot is my favorite Sony game of all time and I personally would prefer they pulled back on the scale a bit on their games but sales show that isn't what the PS audience wants.
The cost of game development essentially doubles every generation so I have no idea how Sony is going to manage these massive budgets in the PS6 generation.
Given the size of Naughty Dog now, salaries in LA being so high, the amount of time it's been in development, plus overheads and marketing I could easily see Intergalactic costing over $400 million.
