@iCyclone Was it still 944 mb when they were getting those winds? I would assume it was rising the eye kinda filled in.

Looks like Learmonth radar got knocked out. Here's final full frame from 4:39 am, showing #Cyclone #NARELLE's eyewall squarely over Exmouth (pink star) & approaching Learmonth (blue star). Winds at Learmonth continued to increase, reaching 75 knots gusting to 104. (Americans: Keep in mind, this is 10-min sustained wind—likely equivalent to 1-min sustained wind of ~85 knots.) Exmouth, which is further N & more exposed than Learmonth—& which got deeper into cyclone—has likely had stronger winds.

@robml3 @JosephStal8920 This person is an example of the causal hobbyist who doesn't understand the tools or what he is looking at, but feels qualified to lecture professionals. As far as tools are concerned, Windy is a fun consumer app with pretty colors.

Powerful #Cyclone #NARELLE (Cat 4) is closing in on #Australia's North West Cape. Huge eye & fat core mean a wide wind field—meaning destructive winds are already hammering coastal communities. Exmouth (on the Cape) will take a direct hit overnight.

@iCyclone 92 mph gust when it was still at 980 mb and still had 40 mb to go. Will be interesting to see the final data.

@SpacecoastPix I know I make it look easy, but this would not have been. And it was never clear that it was going to hit the Cape-- many models showed it missing,

Large eye of #Cyclone #NARELLE (Cat 4 Oz/Cat 3 US) is nearing North West Cape. Exmouth is well inside eyewall & getting raked. Learmonth, a little further S, is now reporting 66 knots gusting to 83—& that will no doubt increase as inner eyewall swallows this location. #Australia

@brendan_harrold @statmospheric2 The BOM advice (advisory) mentions the possibility of coastal flooding but does not predict specific heights. Keep in mind, most places do not get the kind of gargantuan surges we get on the US Gulf Coast. Different bathymetry.

JUST IN: After attaining Category 4 intensity on the east side of Australia, Cyclone Narelle has now reached Category 4 intensity on the WEST side of the oceanic continent. With a ~40 mile-wide, 944 mbar eye and 130 MPH (210 kph) winds, she is closing in on landfall over the peninsular desert town of Exmouth, WA, which has a population of 2,806 people.

@MartyCouncil Yep, I have chased in Australia. Certain parts are very chaseable. The intense quad depends on what direction the storm is moving. It is usually the left-front quad below the equator (as opposed to the right-front quad up here).

@iCyclone Have you ever chased Australia? Or is it too sparsely populated to make chasing viable? Also, in southern hemisphere storms would it be the southwest quadrant you'd be after?

#Cyclone #NARELLE has strengthened to Cat 3. Radar shows big, fat core that'll bring dangerous conditions to wide swath of coast. Karratha is reporting 40 knots gusting to 54. Cyclone will turn SW today & approach North West Cape, hammering Exmouth & Onslow overnight. #Australia

@iCyclone Ha, I think the best intimidation you can do on the porch is start closing shutters while the neighbors are outside.

@iCyclone One of the best runners I've known, would smoke cigarettes while running. I don't think he was really a smoker. I think he did it for an intimidation factor or for sandbagging purposes. He was wicked fast and didn't get winded. 🤷

#Cyclone #NARELLE is looking much healthier today. It will strengthen as it moves parallel to the N coast of Western #Australia—but given its broad, muppety structure, I expect this strengthening to be steady but not rapid. Cyclone will approach North West Cape late Thursday.
