UPDATE: After making this post, I checked the surface observations in Lockhart River, and so far they're much less severe than I was expecting. Peak wind so far: 38 knots gusting to 62. Let's see lwhat happens.

9 am. Radar suggests #Cyclone #NARELLE has taken an unexpected wobble to the N—unfortunate because it brings the cyclone’s intense inner core right over Lockhart River (pop. ~640). They’re no doubt getting raked right now. If you’re in that town and reading this, REMAIN INDOORS.

Radar shows #Cyclone #NARELLE approaching #Queensland. Fortunately it weakened a bit overnight—satellite presentation markedly deteriorated—but it remains powerful. Tiny Coen (pop. ~320) may get brushed by left eyewall as center scoots between that town & Lockhart River.

Thursday evening. Intense #Cyclone #NARELLE lurks in the shadows off #Queensland. Current intensity: Category 5 on the Oz scale (Cat 4 US scale). The cyclone will cross the coast in about 12 hours. Near the center, gusts will exceed 135 knots. A dangerous storm.

#Cyclone #NARELLE is now Cat 5 (Oz)/Cat 4 (US). It'll plow into #Queensland tomorrow with winds gusting over 135 knots. Tiny community of Coen (pop. ~320) could take this beast's full force. If you live up there, RUSH PLANS TO COMPLETION BEFORE DARK. This is dangerous.

#Cyclone #NARELLE is strengthening in Coral Sea. An eye feature is appearing in satellite images. NARELLE will move W & strengthen, striking Cape York Peninsula Friday, crossing Gulf of Carpentaria, then striking Top End Sunday. Threatened areas are mostly sparsely populated.

Since folks keep asking: #Cuba is extremely #hurricane-prone. Just since 2000, they've had 16 'canes, including rare Cat 5 (IRMA2017) & five Cat 4s. In GUSTAV2008, Cuba measured sustained 135 knots with gust to 184—one of highest official wind readings ever recorded in a 'cane.

@magicmike278 Not everyone is familiar with hurricane climatology. Many folks don't even know that hurricanes need warm water.

Can you define what “hurricane proof” means in this context? From the human cost perspective (arguably what really matters), yes, people are evacuated promptly and so on. From the infrastructure perspective, most of the houses and buildings that get destroyed by a hurricane are never rebuilt…

@AriWeather "Flayed" is fewer syllables (one instead of two) and, in my opinion, more descriptive.

Chaserdude word angst: I've seen folks lately writing "fileted" when they meant "flayed." When someone gets harshly criticized or ridiculed for doing something stupid, they are flayed—not fileted. (They are not food. They are not having their bones removed.)

Coral Sea #cyclone (future #NARELLE) looks healthy, with expansive outflow to N & E. It'll head W & should cross Cape York Peninsula around Coen on Friday—likely as Cat 3 Oz/Cat 2 US. Folks along #Queensland coast from Lockhart River to Port Douglas should start preparing.

@mark_collins09 Good way of putting it. And of the two, only "flayed" has become an expression to mean severe criticism.
