I got my PhD two weeks after turning 37. I started the PhD at 27. I was in it for the journey, as I would always say. Id like for it to be sooner but I hope to become Assistant Professor before age 45 inshaAllah. I would appreciate prayers. That gives me about 4 more years inshaAllah to stay resilient on the market. But I respect and trust whatever Allah has planned. And if it takes 6 or 7 years that's fine too. I'm in no rush. Not anymore. My interdisciplinary research agenda is truly phenomenal and will remain relevant for the long run. I'm so excited to keep showing up and sharing all my research in whatever capacity I can. And now, I'll be studying Islam more alongside it. Systems and conventions make us believe we are behind, because everyone is competing. For what gain, truly? Take it easy, people. Enjoy the process. I'm in it for the journey. I am glad I remembered....

@kasot0252 @thecoolmechanic @DrSerunjogiEmma It IS infact systems that determine people's position in society which in turn determines their advantage or disadvantage. To say that people are poor because they make bad decisions/ have low standards is a very privileged take.

I have never understood the logic of slums. Yes you're poor to afford good accommodation but what stops you from keeping your house and area of living clean? Wakeup, clean around your house, organize the compound, plant some flowers, dispose rubbish well... Is there any research that explains such behaviour? Is it because of many people from different backgrounds? But also estates have many people from different backgrounds...

@DrSerunjogiEmma You need to think about the systems that lead to the development of slums in the first place. How do people end up in living in slums? Do they intentionally choose to stay there?

@DrSerunjogiEmma How a person does anything is how they do everything. While someone might think poor people don't have standards because they're Poor, the reverse is true. Poor people are poor because they don't have standards. Wealthy people are wealthy because they have standards.

@FaridahNakoma Correct! Moreover the bride often finds out about the true implications of bride price when it's already paid! i.e. during marriage. We really need to have these discussions about the true meaning of bride price- actually these conversations are overdue!

Whether or not bride price was paid, and how much was paid, will determine alot in the marriage @IdahSendagala over to you
