Rotation is happening on TCG Live on March 26th so I’m bringing back the callback series where I’ll show off the first version of the archetype vs the last to properly send off all the decks we’re losing to rotation in 10 days. I like seeing how far the deck has come since its release… first on the list? Gholdengo! When Gholdengo first released it was nothing special. A cool draw engine but nothing too broken at first. It was a draw engine to Palkia Vstar to help the aggressive water archetype draw more cards in the early game to set up a cross switch/ moonlight shuriken plays It was never tier 1 at the time but had a cult-like following which caused it to have some great placements early on but no wins. Most notably Jelle bringing the palkia version of the deck to some great cash finishes among others This mid-tier deck would sit in this category until the release of energy search pro which fixed a big problem Gholdengo had early game: finding all his energy and getting it in the discard to be accessed by your superiors. The deck was quickly recognized as a top tier aggressive deck and was played alongside drakloak to help set up the Gholdengos (since Genesect was not released yet) so you could TM evo into the drakloaks and get set up from there Then the deck entered its next phase of potential. It was the most played deck day 1 and 2 of the world championships in Anaheim (I played it myself to a decent finish). This was because of Genesect releasing fixing ANOTHER issue the deck had: finding its Gholdngos early game. But wait there’s more… with the release of Mega evolution the deck found the final piece it was missing to become the ultimate aggro deck: Solrock and Lunaton. Now you had the means of attacking with a single prizer as early as turn 1 with Gholdnego on the back line to support more draw and deal with the huge threats. The deck has finally become what it was always meant to be from the very beginning and we’ve been able to witness this awesome deck evolve through the years. I’ll miss this guy. Hate his design as a Pokemon but love the card. He marked himself as the only repeating deck on my limitless page and will be the main reason I’ll earn my invite this year. 💰 🪙 🧀 Farewell Gholdengo!
