A Portuguese tanker carrying 1 million barrels of Iraqi Basra Heavy crude has now crossed the Strait of Hormuz following the sea lane via Larak Island inside Iranian territorial waters.
The vessel, the Ocean Thunder, is the first Iraqi oil shipment to transit the Strait of Hormuz since the current war began on February 28.
This crossing follows an official declaration by Iran on April 4, granting “brotherly Iraq” a special exemption from the shipping restrictions currently paralyzing the waterway.
Iraq is the first major oil producer to receive a formal exemption, potentially allowing up to 3 million barrels per day of Iraqi crude to re-enter global markets.
