We also see a shift in CA1 recruitment during learning. Neurons active before the threat, when the animal is simply exploring the context, are excluded from the engram. This suggests that the hippocampus updates which neurons will store the memory as the experience unfolds.

How does the brain build a memory? A common assumption is that the neurons activated during an experience collectively form the memory engram. In our new Nature Neuroscience paper (finally out!), we show that this is not the case. nature.com/articles/s4159…
