Indigenous Disability Awareness Month – A time for reflection and action November is Indigenous Disability Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples living with disabilities, and to take meaningful action toward more inclusive, culturally safe health care. Indigenous peoples experience disability at higher rates than the general population, often facing systemic barriers to care — including racism, ableism, and limited access to culturally appropriate services. These challenges are compounded by the ongoing impacts of colonization and intergenerational trauma. Northern Health’s corporate strategy emphasizes equity, inclusion, and reconciliation. Through distinctions-based approaches, we are working to better meet the unique needs of Indigenous patients and families, including those living with disabilities. This includes: - Listening to Indigenous voices and lived experiences - Creating welcoming, accessible spaces in health care settings - Collaborating with Indigenous partners to improve services and supports - Advocating for equity in health outcomes and access This month, we reaffirm our commitment to culturally safe, inclusive care for Indigenous peoples living with disabilities — and to building a health system that reflects Indigenous ways of being and knowing. November is Indigenous Disability Awareness Month. Inclusion isn’t just about awareness; it’s about action. Supporting Indigenous Peoples with disabilities means addressing systemic inequities and ensuring equal access to opportunities, spaces, and decision-making.

We have a new program, National Indigenous Navigation Services (NINS)! This national programs assists Indigenous individuals and families, at no charge, in obtaining disability related federal, provincial and territorial disability, as well as other benefits, they are entitled to! The NINS has a new X account and needs followers! @NINSIDC to promote and raise awareness of the program! To assist in that, today if we can get to 100 or more followers (currently at 24), well make a draw at 4 PM (PST) and one of the NINS followers will receive an awesome IDC/BCAND fleece, or, in recognition of our team mate Krissy, the equivalent value of the fleece in sweet and sour sauce, your choice! Give @NINSIDC a follow, you could be sporting this awesome fleece or spicing up your chicken nuggets, it's a win, win!

It is with great sorrow that we inform of the passing of our friend and colleague, Ellen Cohen, while in Geneva. A long time disability advocate, Ellen was part of the Canadian Civil Society delegation that travelled to Geneva last week for Canada's review. Rest well Ellen, you are, and will be missed.

From initial reports it appears that this woman is experiencing a temporary condition caused by a change in medication(s), a condition that her own doctors said was treatable and that symptoms would resolve in a short matter of time. MAiD for mental illness as the sole underlying condition is currently illegal in Canada, as is the promotion of suicide. Where is the RCMP @BCRCMP in all of this, the college of Physicians and Surgeons @cpsbc_ca? Where is the accountability? This person, and all others who were euthanized needlessly deserved better. These are the reasons Track 2 MAiD must be repealed. bc.ctvnews.ca/b-c-judge-halt…
