Three different ways of beating the defender, three different shifts onto the left foot… but the same outcome: a near-side rocket over the keeper’s shoulder. Kvaratskhelia, Rashford, Nico Williams — all hit the crossbar-and-in. Coaching detail below👇

@FOBSVR Good point, thats when maybe a CM ( Rice/Zubimendi) can drop in front and carry the ball to bait the press & find a forward pass (solution 2)

@IndivAnalyst Execution matters a lot too The press Pep used against Arsenal was a lot flatter than this one They were not easily baited out of that shape either They didn't press the central ball carriers but anytime it went wide the widest player would step out This one is more 3-1

The front 4 press isn’t new - and the solutions don’t have to be complex. 5 from Helberg’s Boro vs Stoke: – One CM drops, one behind the press – CBs close → quicker circulation – FBs narrow, offensive side → back-foot receive – Play through to go wide – CBs stepping in Solutions come as much from players as coaches -tailored to profiles, opposition and game context.

So much wrong with Spurs for Forest’s second goal. No structure. Players doing the same jobs. And the recovery runs from Romero, Gray and Tel are shocking -not getting back into the box to defend space or attackers.

Of course, switches and their intentions to stretch the opposition aren’t new. I’m referring to the ones Mendes hits that are more of a FB-to-FB switch to a player on a similar-ish line, which has slightly different intentions to a forward diagonal into a wide player on the last line or for an out-to-in runner in behind.

@IndivAnalyst Across the field switches aren't new. Anytime a team plays compact, a diagonal is used to stretch them. What PSG did well - multiple times -was executing TWO in quick succession in the same phase - a very difficult feat to achieve. Probably why Chelsea looked so stretched.

Nuno Mendes’ quick switch is one of his signature passes - executed across different phases of play. It led to Chelsea’s goal yesterday, but it’s also a big part of PSG’s play. Good coaches reinforce player strengths -and with PSG’s wide profiles, the far side can be gold.

Coaching and reinforcing little details that created two goals yesterday Draw the defender in → outside-foot pass around him → run off his back → receive the 1–2 on the other side Elliot Anderson (Forest) & Dwight McNeil(Everton)

Lateral movement. Diagonal play. Pass & move. Fulham’s 2nd goal vs Spurs has everything 🎯 -Wilson’s lateral movement between lines -Iwobi’s inside diagonal pass -Pass-and-move 1-2 → shot outside the box

This is why Helberg’s Boro got a gem in Malanda - One action that turns a clearance into a chance. Clearance drops. Normally, Ayling goes back to the GK and Sheff Utd step up. Instead, Malanda sprints to support, creates separation, plays a 1–2 through the press, then breaks a line into Whittaker → shot. Without that sprint, there’s no chance. Then he organises the rest defence and applauds the shot 👏 Team player.

Seeing this more and more 👀 Centre-backs with time + space on ball → long diagonal beyond the line Wide runner going outside → inside, between CB & FB Misses the press. Runner attacking facing forward, closer to goal vs defenders retreating = huge advantage. 🧵👇

Once teams generate controlled possession in the first-line of build-up, it’s a trigger. • Forward run on the top line • Eye contact / hand cue / change of speed • Passer’s mind made up Stats suggest long balls + direct play are up this season. Seen this hurt Liverpool a few times already this season
