China has introduced a zero-tariff policy on imports from all 53 African countries with which it has diplomatic ties, starting with products such as South African apples. The policy, which took effect on May 1, is aimed at diversifying African exports to China beyond raw materials by promoting agricultural and processed goods. Previously, most African exports to China came from resource-rich countries and were heavily focused on oil and minerals, with limited development in agricultural trade. The new terms are expected to boost Africa’s competitiveness, encourage higher-value exports like fruits and manufactured products, and open up new market opportunities across the continent.

Switzerland is turning the unused space between train tracks into solar power plants. A startup called Sun-Ways is piloting removable solar panels that roll out like a carpet between the rails. No new land needed, easy to maintain, and they feed clean energy straight into the grid. If the US scaled something similar across its massive rail network, it could generate enough clean, homegrown electricity to power millions of homes. This is the kind of smart, low-impact idea that gets more clean energy online without paving over more fields or wild spaces.
