Goodness gracious ... a Southern Select beer delivery truck in 1952. If I'm not mistaken the truck is a 1948 Ford F1, but I'll let my expert friend @iowahawkblog weigh in. Southern Select beer, which I first encountered in that famous ZZ Top Tex-Mex gatefold for the Tres Hombres album, had an interesting history. Originating in the late 1890s from the Houston Ice & Brewing Co., it quickly became the brewery's flagship brand. In 1913, Southern Select achieved international acclaim by winning the Grand Prix at the Ghent Exposition in Belgium, besting over 4,000 competitors. That a beer from Texas could do that is really exceptional, if you ask me. Prohibition in 1920 forced many breweries to cease operations, including Houston Ice & Brewing but, in true Texas fashion, the Southern Select brand endured: in the 1930s, the rights were acquired by Galveston-Houston Breweries, which resumed production under the Southern Select label. The brewery operated until the mid-1950s, but competition from the national brews forced it to close and the brand faded into history. I ask myself why, given the myriad of Texas breweries these days, somebody doesn't resurrect it. Oh yeah --- I want this truck. @RealAleBrewing @indybrewing @LiveOakBrewing #davescaridservice
