@yeselson @NateSilver538 I disagree. Newsom fought back when a lot of Democrats were hand-wringing. Because he successfully countered Trump's Texas gambit, other blue states followed suit -- and some red states refused to follow Trump's lead.

The redistricting thing was smart by Newsom, and consequential, there's just no particular evidence that he swung the polls much on it as it was popular in a very blue state pretty much from the moment that voters were aware of what the ballot initiative did.

Politics is about making an argument - and Newsom just moved California 20 points on the redistricting initiative, an initiative that was running behind or even, depending on the poll, when it started. Newsom launched, fundraised, and messaged the hell out of the initiative and it won a landslide victory, changing a lot of minds. Being able to persuade people, even unruly Dems, is an achievement in politics.
