This chart makes me laugh every time I see it. The UK, France and Italy are poorer than the poorest US state, Mississippi. Canada and Germany are poorer than the second-poorest US state. The gap will widen. And don’t come with “free healthcare.” You pay for it with absurd taxes

@Noahpinion Hungary and Poland will likely be the last two European countries with majority ethnic European populations. I would say it is one of the MOST important countries in Europe. It will be one of the last European countries that is actually still European.

Why is Hungary so important to JD Vance and the rightists anyway? It's not even a particularly important country within Europe.

GDP per capita 🤦‍♀️ The most worthless metric of them all. I am not even mad, this is actually genuinely sad. Yes, your billionaires are richer than our billionaires. Congratulations, I guess? lol. Imagine being so brainwashed to believe that just because your billionaires are the wealthiest billionaires in the world, you are somehow part of that exclusive club. And what is more - to truly believe that people in West Virginia are wealthier and have better life than people in Italy or France. Especially nowadays, when half of the population lives paycheck to paycheck, their bills are constantly rising, TWO full-time working parents are struggling with their expenses, and it's only going to get worse. Even a large % of the middle class is one health emergency or layoff away from bankruptcy. This is just not the flex you think it is, and it is genuinely distressful to do this to your fellow citizens, given the struggle so many of them are currently facing.

Europoor is an entirely accurate phrase. America is simply in a different league.

@FreightAlley If the US would be at war with China, the container ships are probably less of a problem than the fact there would be no goods to fill containers with.

The NATO fiasco just exposed a massive US national security vulnerability: America barely owns any ships. The top 5 container shipping firms (all European or Chinese) control 65% of global capacity. The US has zero container shipping firms in the top 30 — and less than 0.2% of worldwide container shipping. If Europe won’t even let us use their bases to strike a regime they hated… What happens to this shipping capacity when we’re in a hot war with China and European leaders demand their shipping firms reduce capacity or cut off American businesses that do business with the US Department of War? Supply chains are the front lines.

After a video appeared of Yanis Varoufakis feverishly dancing at an event in Moscow, he decided to justify his visit in an Unherd article. In it, he says he will be accused “of reciting Moscow’s speaking points.” Here’s a list of his lines matched by those from Moscow. A thread:

@RosenvoldGeo This would not have been an unsolvable problem if people had chosen to work together. But Europe did need to get its head out of its ass on defense and strategic autonomy and probably wouldn’t with a less harsh reality check. Even now there are still large parts that haven’t…

No matter who sits in the White House, the fundamental problem is that the US is concerned with China and Europe is concerned with Russia. That mismatch is going to cause a rift between Europe and the US and make it impossible to be 100% aligned even if we get a “new Biden”.

@adamkapit @max_muller1054 @AndreasSteno If the claim is US spends more because Europe spends less, why doesn’t the US plan to spend less now that Europe is increasing spending? I’ll tell you why. It’s because your claim is propaganda. Try figuring out the real reasons for the US defense budget instead of parroting BS.

You obviously can’t assess the de facto NATO contributions this way. We all know that it’s the actual defense budget that matters when push comes to shove. Europe needs to immediately (and most likely will) step up its actual defense spending!

@RosenvoldGeo There’s one important aspect that’s omitted in this propaganda narrative about defense spending vs. healthcare. US society spends far more on healthcare than other countries. The defense budget is not the reason healthcare is outrageously expensive in the US.

For the record: In 2026, the Denmark will spend 3.5% of GDP on defense (US is at 3.3%). We understood Trump’s message on military spending and almost every European country has acted on it extremely rapidly. Btw - we can still afford free health care and a budget surplus even with 3.5% defense spending. So no - we don’t have those things because we were spending less on defense. We have them because we pay much higher taxes.
Andreas Steno Larsen@AndreasSteno

I get that many Americans don’t want to de facto pay for NATO anymore. I get it, I understand that the US paid more than others for a long time. It is all very well understood. We can take care of ourselves. It is ok. You don’t need to lecture us day in and day out about it.

@AndreasSteno Not arguing the fact most European countries have underspent on defense. But do you think the US spends on defense for the sake of NATO or for its own ambitions? Or put another way, do you think the US would cut its defense budget meaningfully if it pulled out of NATO?

@AndreasSteno @ErikSTownsend @AnasAlhaijji Recommended read. Are you still sticking with the 4D chess view? If so the US would have to escalate further and get Iran to attack GCC countries infrastructure. In any case, Iran controls the SOH until all drone and missile threats are eliminated.

@AndreasSteno Interesting read, Steno! I guess the wild card here is whether Trump will escalate further attacking Iranian infrastructure triggering Iran attacks on GCC countries infrastructure.

Tomorrow, I am going to show that there is actually a path towards a fully recovered oil-flow in 4 weeks from now, even despite a situation where Trump doesn't really end the war, or where he leaves with solving the Strait. There is TOO much doom and gloom around in Oil markets
