When I was younger, I was watching football and thinking ‘there isn’t anyone professional that is Muslim or South Asian so is it even possible?’ But it actually pushed me even more because I wanted to be that person for these young girls, to show that they can do it because that’s what I didn’t have. I hope one day there isn’t even a question about whether you can be South Asian and play football. I want the representation barrier to disappear. In both Pakistan and the UK, I want young girls to have access to football – pitches, clubs and real opportunities. There needs to be accessibility within communities so that girls can actually play.” Despite 11.4% of grassroots players in the UK being South Asian women, representation at the elite level remains extremely limited, highlighting the gap between participation and opportunity.
