Fascinating to see these photos of almost 20 English coins from the early 10C found in recent excavations at the Palazzo della Rovere in Rome, in the middle of the early medieval Schola Saxonum. Work on-going! Photos and more details from here: youtu.be/8nQtFQbmKME?fe…

@karenbar13 @ERC_Research @LitteraCarolina @ercb2c @brad_dan @CharlotteDenoel @LieveWatteeuw @bodleianlibs @BLMedieval @HyPIRUoL @uniofleicester @UoLMedieval The evangelist is Luke, from BL Add MS 40618 f.21v, and the book is – obv. – blank in the original (my thanks to Harley MS 2965 for the lettering). It, and books in other portraits, are probably blank because they show the exterior cover of the codex, rather than an open page.

@CaballoBat @Helen_Gittos @brixworthpc The Friends of All Saints' are working on getting the tech sorted for a live online feed. It may not be possible to do it this year, but if not, certainly next year (as long as the lecturer is willing, of course!). This is a priority.

@Helen_Gittos @brixworthpc @InsularMSS Could it be zoomed? Happy to pay an entrance fee eg via Eventbrite?

For #FindsFriday (if anyone's still there!) a gorgeous portrait coin of Louis the Pious, minted in Aachen 814-816, from the Jedomĕlice hoard (Kladno, CZ) 2006. Picture from Jan Videman.

Read all about it! Jess Hodgson's remarkable discovery of nearly invisible inscriptions made by a woman, Eadburg, in an 18thC Kent manuscript, has been picked up by The Guardian! @HyPIRUoL @NCanagarajah @MRC_Leicester @InsularMSS @bodleianlibs theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/n…

@hattie_soper We've been giggling about #talktothehand on the left for weeks. It is probably terribly serious though. Is there such a thing as #MeTooMedieval ?

thank you Eadburg for these very iconic eighth-century doodles 😭 #talktothehand

@SisterWalburga @bodleianlibs @HyPIRUoL @FactumFound @bodleiancsb @Midlands4Cities @ahrcpress @uniofleicester @UoLMedieval Probably not. Reading, writing & comprehension of a language = separate skills. Top scribes could do all 3. Einhard says that Charlemagne tried to learn to read & write, & had a tablet under his bed to practice forming letters. ‘But his effort, begun too late, achieved little’.

Can't help thinking the pictures and the way the name is etched in is rather childish. Do you think she was a child at the time? Is there other similar examples in other manuscripts?

An amazing discovery by Prof Susan Rankin (and palaeographer Michael Gullick) shared in this afternoon’s Lyell Lecture!
This was completely unknown, and tells us a lot about the scribe and his connections.
Stewart J. Brookes@Stewart_Brookes
Susan Rankin ends her Lyell lectures with one of the most dramatic “reveals” that I’ve ever seen — she tells us that her scribe R who added the musical notation to @bodleianlibs 775 is also the scribe of the Great Domesday Book!!! @richove leads the applause!
