@cremieuxrecueil Vote for hyper localized times, the clocks are constantly adjusted so noon every day is solar noon in your town. The town a few miles to the east is a couple minutes ahead of you. The town a few miles to the west is behind you.

Just going to remind everyone that this issue of Harper's Weekly was basically a joke on the Irish, implying they were in some way less evolved or secretly the European cousins of negros, because so many Irish immigrants had a reputation for drunken fights or poor behavior. It was a satirical attempt to bully Irish into improving their behavior, and was not a reflection of an honest belief of Americans perceiving Irish people as actually Africans, as not Europeans or as not white. Also, Thomas Nast, who often drew the Irish in this way, was in part due to his strong dislike of the Catholic church, and view of Irish people as bringing in Catholic influence into the country. Since the first census in 1790, Irish have always been counted white in this country. And the suggestion that they were not white in the past is mostly just an anachronism pushed by anti whites.

@KeithWoodsYT Our government considered them white but they also considered Syrians white. So that argument is out. Your genetics argument is flawed because it’s limited to time tested on pure individuals which largely don’t exist in the western hemisphere anymore.

Frankly, I think white-nationalism is useless. The rhetoric against nons is the same as that for the Irish. But the Irish weren’t Americanized by liberalism, they were brutalized by the cultural power of our nation. We can do the same to browns. Our identity is superior.

And this isn't new either, people in the 80s and 90s knew this, it was even in the Simpsons. But rather than portraying Apu as a foreigner taking advantage of intellectually vulnerable people, his blatant disregard for his new community's wellbeing is just sort of a fun curiosity. And Homer is the real idiot for having allowed himself to be taken advantage of. After Apu loses his job, the Simpsons let him stay with them and they fight for him to get rehired at the Kwik-E-Mart.

I've casually observed this in my own life. When entering an indian-run gas station, I'll start checking the expiry dates on the food I'm about to buy and find that it has (or is nearly) expired. I've seen this in everything from bagged chips to soda. I've heard second-hand from an employee that one of cost saving techniques is owners buying nearly expired inventory from other businesses (restaurants) and using them in the prepared foods. I've stopped visiting gas station with indians behind the counter.

It's time for five-card draw to make a comeback. Texas hold em has dominated the spectator poker scene, and it is quite interesting to watch on tv with so many community cards and rounds of betting making a mathematically accurate understanding of play important. Time to go back to no community cards, the only information available is the bets and how many cards they ask for on the draw. It becomes more about bluffing and reading the man than calculating their pre flop range. Too many people tried to turn their fun home game into the poker they saw on tv.

Silent poker isn't poker. It's a card game of skill with incomplete information, intellectually challenging, but poker is historically and intrinsically social, and that means talking--some gamesmanship, some talk about sports, some about good series to stream, some about the family or work if other players are friends. And, at least in my experience, never talk about politics. Silent poker is an abomination.

If chess skills are equally present in both sexes, and women are 8% of the player base, women should be roughly 8% of each decile. Just looking at the top 10% of players should yield a 92-8 split, just the bottom 10% should be a 92-8 split, the 50-60% decile would be 92-8, etc This is not what we find, but that's okay. Everyone can still enjoy Chess and a few women will become so good they would easily beat most people (men or women) who ever sit in front of a chess board. The need for women's chess is entirely psychological. If women decide they don't care that that being rated and competing with men means they're ranked relatively lower, then they don't need it. If it makes them so discouraged that they feel they need women's chess, then there you go.

The "need" for women's chess is fairly simple to explain. Women comprise about 8% of chess players, meaning there are at least 12 men for every woman competing. And when you're "selecting" amazing individuals near the tails of any competence distribution, it's not the averages you care about - it's the exceptional individuals. And the reality is that simply through greater participation, men throw about 12x as many people at the problem, and so the odds are that the top players will be male. And they are, no surprise to the math. Now, if you NEVER saw exceptional women, it would be different. But women have been ranked as high as 2735, which is ludicrously high. So they exist; they're just very rare by comparison, as you would expect. If the roles were reversed (by a factor of 144x, mind you), it's pretty easy to conclude women would then be on top. In other words, it tells you very little about the comparative distributions of male vs female geniuses when the populations are of massively different sizes. This is my daughter, who just beat me yesterday. I'm not rated, but she must be pretty good :-)

It's amazing that these decrepit neocon imbeciles have gotten every major issue wrong for 40 years and just absolutely insist on keeping their streak of unbroken wrongness alive at all costs. Yes, 27 million people immigrated here between 1880 and 1924. The difference is that they came here legally, there was no welfare state for them to leach off of, they were not flooding in from dysfunctional lawless third world hellholes, and they actually desired to assimilate into American culture. Oh and we had 250 million fewer people living in the country at the time. So in other words, it was nothing like our current situation. At all. Not remotely.

27 million people immigrated to the United States between 1880 and 1924 and it seemed to work out fine. What it did for our day was make sure that, down the line, the blood-and-soil inbreds at the Federalist had some competition.

Working until your death is basically the default human condition. There are things the boomers had better than us in terms of economic health. But if your goal is something like a comfortable retirement, it's more possible for us today than most people who have ever lived.

I have not yet read the full trial transcript. But so far, I do know this. Karmelo Anthony was entitled to a jury of his peers. He did not get that. On that ground alone, he is entitled to a new trial. Minorities are not interchangeable. The prosecutor’s reported proffered reasons for striking all black jurors —that they were teachers—appears to be pretext. Anthony needs a new lawyer on appeal and in a new trial. His trial lawyer allowed in opinion evidence that should have been struck. He also seemed unable to appreciate and counter the impact of racial overtones in that case. Those overtones are clear even on Twitter commentary as folks seek to paint Metcalf as having no culpability in what happened and Karmelo as a complete monster. The facts on how the matter escalated are more complicated than that. He and they had no such authority. They are also apparent in the statements that seek to deputize Metcalf and other kids with authority to remove Anthony. They had none and initiated the conflict. That does not mean they should have been killed but it means they have explaining to do. The lawyer for Anthony apparently did not require that explaining. It is fair to ask how the Anthony’s ended up selecting that lawyer. The trial judge must be disqualified in any new trial if he actually gave an interview about the case before the appeal was considered. He has negatively affected the appeal rights of the defendant. He should know better. He should also be disqualified if he has any relationship with the Metcalf side. In a criminal trial, the prosecution has the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The defendant does not have to prove he is not guilty. Those rules apply to everyone. They apply to Anthony.
