It explicitly prohibits religious tests for office. Thomas Jefferson called the combination of church and state "loathsome" — writing that it reduced people to "dupes and drudges" for centuries. Madison warned that "strongly guarded is the separation between religion and government in the Constitution." John Adams said of the American government: "It will never be pretended that any persons employed in that service had interviews with the gods, or were in any degree under the influence of Heaven." Christian nationalists don't just cherry-pick quotes. They cherry-pick the Founders who lost the debate. The Constitution belongs to Madison and Jefferson — not Patrick Henry. That's not opinion. That's history.
