Not the point. Iowa never will get kids like that consistently, just like most teams that are not blue bloods. You have to win and have an appealing system where kids think they will be featured and have a chance to showcase their skills for the next level. Outside of maybe the PG position, he doesnt and wont ever have that, its not his system. He will always be in a situation where he has to over achieve based on his roster.

That being said - my opening day roster would've been different and I already disagree with Chaim on multiple things.
Nelson Velazquez isn't one of them.
However, I'd of started the season with Nelson on the roster.
Because:
My OF would be Walker, Church and Baez.
My Infield would've been Gorman, Winn, Saggese and Burleson
My DH would've been Nelson Velazquez
My C would be Herrera
You're probably thinking I'm missing someone - hot take.....
I think based on his spring the Cardinals are making a mistake starting JJ and he should start the season in Memphis - again ....I might be alone here but it's how feel.
I think my opening day lineup would've been this:
Winn
Burleson
Herrera
Velazquez
Baez
Gorman
Walker
Saggese
Church
My opening day starter would be Libby
My rotation would've included Fitts and Palante would've been my 6th man - because I'd run a 6 man - regardless of schedule - it's about observation and giving reps - not about winning -
I like what Chaim has done - and it's okay not agreeing with every move and still liking the overall picture.

My only issue with the Nelson thing: In the future if you're a non roster invitee or an older player wanting a prove it deal, I would have a ton of reservations on joining the Cardinals. You can't have a better spring - meaning any competition was disingenuous and then your credibility as an organization drops from a player standpoint. It also means every AB Nelson had in Cardinals camp was a waste of his time - and every AB he had took away from an AB from someone else - There's a huge trickle down effect in all aspects of operations by making this decision. I say all that while also saying I agree with the decision and I'm not worried about Nelson Velazquez getting away. It's the principle. We've dealt with over 15 years over a President that seemed scared to navigate a 40 man. It's disheartening that 40 man logic was the root of this decision- when ultimately just saying we're rebuilding and we want to see ABs from Saggase and Church, Walker and Scott. Again, I think I agree with this decision - I just think they maybe should've decided not to invite him to camp. #stlcards
