🚨 Iran: Former National Football Captain Parviz Ghalichkhani Dies at 81 Parviz Ghalichkhani, former captain of Iran’s national football team and a three-time Asian champion, died at age 81 in a Paris hospital after years battling Alzheimer’s disease. Widely regarded as one of Iran’s greatest footballers, he played for Daraei, Persepolis, Taj, and Pas. Beyond sports, Ghalichkhani opposed both the Shah’s dictatorship and the clerical regime, was imprisoned under the monarchy, and boycotted the 1978 World Cup in protest against the Pahlavi regime. In later years, he condemned the 1988 mass execution of political prisoners and defended executed Iranian athletes including Habib Khabiri and Hamid Attarati, remaining vocal in support of Iran’s freedom movement.
