Te reo Māori was made an official language in 1987, followed by New Zealand sign language in 2006. These remain New Zealand’s recognised official languages till today.

National Standards ruined students. It made teachers resign because many saw the harm it was doing to students. The good old English and Math curriculum was replaced by the National Standards that included the failing numeracy and literacy standards and tests. This is dangerous and uncalled for. Insulting teachers and students alike. Why does this government make ad hoc decisions? We know that we have to raise Numeracy and Lit levels but doing it in this way is harmful for everyone. This is a repeat of what National did years ago when they implemented National Standards. Many students were told overnight that they were under performing and it set so many students back. It was a cruel thing to do back then and we are here again with National.
