Reading this headline you’d think Yale admitted 50 or 100 or 1000 black medical students. It is the grand total of 44 black students compared to 100s of Asian and White students that has caused this furor. Sending hugs to all black students who will suffer abuse.

From a study published April 30, 2025, in PLOS One by Tufts University (Schaffner, Hershewe, Kava, Strell). Researchers used a large, representative U.S. sample (drawing from the 2022 Cooperative Election Study with tens of thousands of respondents) and ran an experiment: When asked to rate their "mental health" (excellent / very good / good / fair / poor), conservatives rated themselves substantially higher than liberals. This replicated the well-known gap seen in many prior surveys. When the question was changed to rate "overall mood" instead, the ideological gap entirely disappeared. Conservatives no longer showed a clear advantage — and in some framings, they rated their mood slightly worse than liberals. The authors conclude that much of the apparent "conservative mental health advantage" is likely due to differing interpretations and stigma around the specific phrase "mental health." Conservatives appear more reluctant to apply that label to themselves (even if their actual emotional state warrants it).

You were not called racist merely for disagreeing about admissions policy. You were called racist because you repeatedly framed minority physicians as inherently “less qualified” based largely on statistical differences in standardized test scores while dismissing the substantial evidence that diverse physician workforces improve trust, access, preventive care, and outcomes. And notice the sleight of hand you keep performing: you convert “race may be one factor among many in holistic admissions” into “race alone replaces qualifications.” That is not my argument. It is the caricature required to sustain yours. Medical schools already evaluate applicants on dozens of dimensions beyond MCAT and GPA. They always have. Your outrage only appears when diversity becomes one of those considerations. That is why this conversation keeps circling back to race whether you admit it or not.

@KenadiCapone @Otter26and @drDendere No, it shows rates of complaints. That tends to indicate those doctors are making mistakes. The study tries to downplay it by saying it’s only 1.4x as likely. 40% more complaints is huge and highlights the difference in ability between blacks and white doctors
