She earned this honor based on merit as a biomedical engineering student, yet she can’t share her perspectives? She could give a video recorded version of the speech before the ceremony if there are in-person concerns. People do what they want to for whom they want to.

USC announced that valedictorian Asna Tabassum’s commencement speech has been canceled, stating it was “necessary to maintain the safety of our campus and students” ‘I am surprised that my own university has abandoned me,’ Tabassum said in a statement uscannenbergmedia.com/2024/04/15/pro…

“COVID is here to stay so deal with it.” “The genocide of Palestinians is here to stay so deal with it.” “AI is here to stay so deal with it.” Should we discuss all the things that are never here much less to stay and what all the “here to stay” people are complicit with?

@davidgmandel Cause nothing says “I’m not scared” like getting a protective order and changing the locks.🤦🏼‍♀️

Social worker: This mother doesn't understand the risk from the domestic violence. Me: Has she engaged in behaviors to protect herself and her children? Social Worker: Yes, she has gotten a protective order; she changed the locks of her apartment so he can't get in. She has a male relative living with her so she feels safer. And she is working to save money hire a lawyer to get full custody of the children. Me: It sounds like she is doing a lot to protect herself and her children. It seems like she is taking the danger from the perpetrator very seriously. What else do you want her to do or say to show you that she understands the risks. Social Worker: I want her to say she is scared! Let's stop putting protective mothers' behaviors under a gender standard microscope. Instead, let's listen, be curious, look for strengths (not just deficits), stop simplistically applying our definitions of protection, and partner with them. #Partnering #StopBlamingMothers @SafeandTogether

“… DEI advocates, the scientific community, universities, and federal agencies need to collectively call out the dangers of setting aside DEI and come up with robust ways to demonstrate its value to society,” argues Shirley Malcom in a #ScienceEditorial. scim.ag/6oD

@EnglishOER I also noticed that ChatGPT-4 has trouble summarizing complex and nuanced arguments and analysis and does better with straightforward data

A caution about asking AI for summaries or conversion of documents to alternate formats or genres: ChatGPT will mischaracterize as it summarizes. For example, its summary suggested that a text was celebrating the use of AI for instructional design when it wasn't.

One of the things you learn as a writing program person is that there is a whole sea of words that faculty define differently from one another and students define differently as well: Revise. Edit. Proofread. Format. Genre. Citation style. Style. Register. Form. Structure.

ATTEMPTING to break the spirits of Black children through arbitrary grooming codes is a tradition we need to end. This shameful ruling and ongoing denial of an inclusive learning environment is enraging and heartbreaking. I passed the #CrownAct in Maryland to prevent this madness

@kayewhitehead That level of aggression would never be tolerated from a Black athlete. The media labels them for not talking enough, not smiling enough, celebrating too much, expressing slight frustrations, etc. A tale of two different experiences and tolerances.

@MzJaneNova I also thought that the initial letter was very collegial and did not deserve that harsh of a response.

Weird response. It shouldn’t be considered toxic to inform other researchers about studies that need to be cited to strengthen their claims. It’s also a good case study for understanding genres and discourses of research. (1/3)
