Most colleges and universities are not proactively considering the needs of disabled and chronically ill faculty, staff, and students at this point in the pandemic and never ever will because they legally don’t have to until the people they should be considering out themselves.

I guess I’ve added “ending up in a city with really bad outdoor air quality that’s not where my home is” to the list of reasons I don’t care to travel for conferences.

You could have your conference at an expensive hotel w/poor AC, limited hybrid access, rooms with fake walls where sound easily bleeds thru, no mics, and standing room only "gathering" spaces bc the facility wants to deter loitering. Or you could just book a uni. Or go virtual.

today I went through some my course evaluations. one of the questions was 'what would you change to improve this course?' one answer: 'nothing, I love this professor' next answer right after 'different professor.' I thought it was funny but also speaks to the limited use of evals

Sure, but if we didn't use this index, average people might start realizing they're actually disabled (or about to be!). They might even get the idea that disability and extreme privilege are conflated in our society, and they're being played for chumps. Can't have that.

As PolySci major, I remember being taught that one of the defining characteristics of a federal republic is not knowing for many days if a significant member of the federal legislative branch is alive or dead. I was undergrad 25 years ago, so can an expert confirm, please?
