Tonight is Lag B’Omer, commemorating the cessation of death of the students of Rebbe Akiva, and the life and legacy of his most prized student Rebbe Shimon bar Yochai. What lies at the heart of Rebbe Shimon’s Torah? I believe his most central teaching is the presence of God within the lived experience of every single Jew—no matter how seemingly distant or disengaged that Jew may seem. Rebbe Shimon saw every Jew aflame with the light of Torah. Rebbe Shimon promised that the Jewish People will never lose the Torah—because within the life of every Jew is a form of revelation. Rebbe Shimon taught us how to capture a moment — discovering eternity within each fleeting moment. Tonight we celebrate Rebbe Shimon’s Torah.

I am horrified and angered by the swastikas painted on homes and synagogues in Queens, including on a plaque honoring survivors of Kristallnacht. This is not just vandalism — it is a deliberate act of antisemitic hatred meant to instill fear.

There is no place for antisemitism in Queens or anywhere in our city. I stand in solidarity with our Jewish neighbors. Their safety, dignity, and belonging are non-negotiable.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating and I am confident those responsible will be held accountable.
