Herod the Great was the one who when at around the time of Jesus’ birth sent an edict out to slay all male infants under 2 near and around Bethlehem, where they fled to Egypt for a time until his death. The Herod after is his son who beheaded John the Baptist (Jesus’ cousin). John the Baptist condemned Herod and Herodias for their relationship as she was his half brother’s ex wife and in Jewish law it was forbidden, also he was not dead. So he was put in prison and wasn’t killed for fear of the Jews until his wife influenced her daughter to ensnare him into a request to have him beheaded and brought on a platter.
