We analysed 25 million #X (formerly Twitter) posts to paint a data story of history unfolding in #Kenya. Online trends led to offline protests spurred by #RejectFinanceBill2024 #OccupyParliament, which have since shifted to #RutoMustGo. Three key insights from Nendo are below.🧵

1. Retweets rule: More than 90% of interactions are reposts/retweets. This means a smaller vocal and influential minority is being perpetually amplified to millions thanks to others spreading the message. Millions of lurkers looking by.

2. Online Posts to Offline Impact: The Finance Bill's conversations reached a fever pitch after the law was passed by parliament, triggering a wave of offline protests. #KenyansOnX organised to find the lost, free abducted content creators, fundraisers for injured or dead, & more

3. From Finance to the Future: Conversations quickly evolved from #RejectFinanceBill towards governance, the rule of law, and the country's state. Spurred by #GenZ and captured through the cameras and lenses of #GenY, this is unprecedented territory outside of election periods.
