In 2003 I was not Catholic, but found myself in Spain for Holy Week. I had never even heard of a religious procession. But on my way home one night I got cut off by one. It was like getting mugged by history, tradition, beauty, and Catholicism all at once. It was glorious.

The chief priests, the Pharisees, and the scribes, were panicked when they heard that many people had come to believe in Jesus as a result of the raising of Lazarus. As Jesus gained more and more popularity, they feared they would soon lose the people's love and respect and that they would quickly become powerless. Although the fear of the Jews was baseless, their actions brought about the fulfilment of God's divine plan of salvation for mankind (John 11:45-56). Fear is such a dangerous thing. When we are controlled by fear, like the Jews, we make decisions that we always regret later. Let us examine our conscience. Do I feel threatened by anyone doing well? Let others shine. Celebrate the greatness in each person. Be humble enough to accept the truth.
