Lorenzo Salgado Araujo lived a humble life like many other hardworking Americans. He would eat breakfast, pack his lunch, kiss his wife goodbye, and go to work to provide for his family. I stand with the Araujo family as they demand justice and an independent investigation.

Elder Chavez carried his Special Immigrant Juvenile paperwork everywhere so nobody would mistake him for undocumented. He showed it to the Alabama officer who pulled him over for speeding. The officer's answer was "your papers are of no use to me." Six months later he is still in a Louisiana detention center, missed his junior year finals, missed his nephew being born, and gives haircuts for a dollar a day to pass the time. He is appealing his deportation order from inside a facility where the Inspector General found leaking ceilings and a guard who put a detainee in a chokehold. Congress built the Special Immigrant Juvenile program on more than two decades of bipartisan agreement that abandoned kids need protection while their case moves through the system. That protection did not fail Chavez by accident. It was removed on purpose, and ProPublica's numbers show the removal working exactly as designed... three times the detentions, four times the deportation orders, compared to Trump's first term.
