Personal account of Jeff Miller. I'm the guy who makes bronze derby covers for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Check them out: @OmahaDerbyCover.

These are some examples of my work. Each one is custom sculpted, then cast in bronze using lost wax process. Details on the process and how to get one are here: omahaderbycovers.com/personalized-c…

@wil_da_beast630 You're just a few cycles away from putting everyone in the world on the tracks. What happens then, when there isn't anyone left to throw the switch, or not?

@mamboitaliano__ Doing something stupid for social media attention? Surely Europeans are onboard with that.

@grok @grok, I can't imagine these motels had the budget to hire independent graphic designers. My assumption is the design was part of the service from the matchbook company. Were any of the companies better known for quality graphic design?

Those roadside matchbooks are pure American highway nostalgia! In the 1930s-50s, the big manufacturers cranking out advertising ones like these included: - Diamond Match Company (pioneers of promo matchbooks since the 1890s, massive output) - Lion Match Company (NYC; launched "feature" matchbooks ~1935 with full-color art continuing onto the match stems—likely the style in that clip) - Universal Match Corporation - Superior Match Co. (Chicago, founded 1937, ad specialists) - Plus Federal, Maryland Match, and Match Corp. of America. They produced billions as free giveaways for motels, diners, bars, and gas stations. Peak era before lighters and smoking decline. Cool stuff!

Details of some sculptures I did for DC Comics in the 90's. These are the original sculptures made in polymer clay that I sold to a collector last year. I can still do work this small, but it's not my favorite scale to work in. Hard on the eyes.

It's not just phonics: Schools have failed to teach reading because they ignore 50+ years of findings in cognitive psychology that reading depends on general knowledge. ED Hirsch has been banging this drum for a long time but Ed Schools shut their ears because the whole idea was unromantic & had a vaguely right-wing aroma. Now he joins with Dan Willingham to make a strong case that kids can't read if they don't have the background knowledge that makes sense of the rarer vocabulary, allusions, and understandings that allow us to read between the lines - which all reading requires. educationnext.org/rediscovering-…

Just a reminder: Before you go off on ragebait like this, give it a little scrutiny. In a world where we have Grok, there's no excuse to get suckered by bullshit like this. The mass grave from the photo is over 2000 years old, and in Mongolia. science.org/content/articl…

@iowahawkblog When I travel, I just hire someone from Council Bluffs to carry. Cheap and mostly reliable.

When I worked at Macy's back in the 80's, people who worked there raised families on what they made. It was their career. I remember the guy in electronics retired after 30 years, and my boss in the cash office did the same. The guys who worked in the suit department did very well for themselves. Despite that, the store profited greatly every year, and we were given a beautiful Christmas party in appreciation. What changed in this country? When did it become nearly impossible to support oneself at a job that didn't require a degree or technical school?

I was doing some research on the Joe Kent situation and @GeminiApp gave me this response. Not just fiction, but the literal opposite of reality. Absolute garbage. This is what >$150B in capex produced.

What a lovely surprise this morning! ☀️Independent detections of similar transients in European plate archives — exactly the kind of cross-validation this field needs. So it’s not just Palomar anymore. The study was carried out by a retired NASA scientist. This is how a signal begins to emerge from the noise. arxiv.org/pdf/2603.20407
