We supported Ariana and Demi and honestly… shoulda woulda coulda. So many, like – ugh! I try not to think about it.
Even when we did Demi and Ariana’s tours, the whole arena knew who we were, were screaming for us… It was like, ‘Guys, come on! Label, management, what are you doing?! We’re known! We have something here! We should be finessing it.’ But it just never happened.”

Unfortunately I only have time for a rushed tweet rn, but I could write a whole essay on parasocial relationships. In a world of influencers, social media, and celeb culture, it’s something we’ve all engaged with to some degree. My own account is basically founded on it… and it’d be a lie to say I’ve never looked back on something I posted and felt that I crossed a line.
Everyone has a different view of where exactly that line is, what exactly is appropriate, and when exactly something becomes “fair game”. It can cause tension between fans – and sometimes, unfortunately, it can cause tension between fans and the very people they’re fans of.
These are ever-evolving “relationships” that fans and public figures are constantly figuring out how to navigate. Every fan will go about it differently, and every public figure will too. I certainly can’t advise people on how to get it “right” because I don’t have the answer. I’m not even sure if there IS a right answer. What I *am* sure of is that I’m not the authority on the subject – I get it wrong constantly. (Some people think it’s unhealthy to even own a fan account in the first place. Some would say it’s unhealthy to follow celebrities at all. And some would argue that we all just need to get offline and go touch some grass expeditiously.)
It’s a dynamic I think about a lot, though. Or at least, I try to. And that’s all I can advise, really: that everyone ponders where they think the line is, and then tries not to cross it. Sometimes, a celebrity you follow might even explicitly establish certain boundaries (see: Chappell Roan). And sometimes, people might cross those boundaries anyway. They might argue that they have a right to, or that no one can stop them. And you might agree, or you might not.
But while we can’t tell others how to think or how to feel, we *can* all explore how WE think. How WE feel.
It’s something I try to keep in mind, because I can find it all too easy to forget I’m not just in my own little bubble when I post. I’m on the world wide web, where my posts could reach anyone, anywhere. And as a Little Mix fan, I’m well aware that they often see their fans’ posts – as do their friends and family. Journalists also scour social media for showbiz gossip to write about and fan comments to quote in articles. It’s something worth considering before posting.
So next time you’re thinking about sharing gossip or a rumour or an opinion, try to consider whether it’s to do with someone’s public life or their private/personal life. (There isn’t even time to debate whether we should have an interest in strangers’ private lives to begin with, but let’s be honest, most of us probably do to some level or another – whether that’s a celebrity/a Love Island contestant/an influencer/a politician, or just a random person you follow/your situationship’s ex-situationship/the local eccentric).
And if you are considering making a public post about someone’s private life, also consider this: Who might see it? Who might share it? How might the subject of the post feel if they see it?
Then consider: Do I still want to discuss it publicly? Would I rather discuss it privately instead? Do I still even want to discuss it at all?
We’ll all have different answers to those questions. I won’t try telling you what to think. Only you know how you feel.
