If I’m honest I didn’t really want to go. I knew it would be difficult. I knew it would be overwhelming. And it was those things, but I’m so glad I went. And I’m definitely going back with my wife and older kids as soon as possible. And anyone else I can drag along. Just the production is a marvel, and very cleverly designed to immerse you in the events of that day. When I sat down waiting for the introductory film, I was next to a recreated decorative prop from the festival. Then I noticed the bullet holes. These weren’t recreations. Someone shot to murder kids at a festival and this is where the bullets ended up. There is a terrible juxtaposition that lies at the heart of Nova. Young hippy kids full of love and life and beauty, encountering a terrible evil medieval death cult. Between wind chimes and signs for love, the frenzied chants of ‘God is greatest’ repeat over and over and over. On mobile phones you see clips of young people shot and terrified as they make messages for their parents, and you wonder which of them made it. And then you arrive at the walls of lives taken, and try as you might there are too many to give each person the attention and remembrance they deserve. The most bitter element is those who most need to see this exhibition won’t, but if you have someone in your life you can persuade, and if you want to see the civilisational battle in its purest form, then going along and witnessing for yourself isn’t a duty, it’s a necessity.
