Getting back on X with publication news: historians.org/perspectives-a… The joy we can find in the past might enable us to imagine a joyful future once again, rather than seeing nothing but catastrophe. And the joy of teaching smart students.

And the reason for being out there is simple: “Because the world sucks and I want to make it better.” Bringing pride and joy to the streets, facing police and National Guard armed to their teeth, I believe, already makes the world a better place. I hope it'll be a contagious joy.

What makes protests in the streets powerful: they are sites of pride, even joy, when people reconnect, when solidarity is forged; when there is music and dancing. It's also what makes protests in the streets beautiful. (And a beautiful report!) prospect.org/justice/cries-…

For so long people have been yearning for Democratic leaders to stand up against Trump. Now it's people in the streets taking the lead in resisting: "We are not afraid." The wall of fear is broken! theguardian.com/us-news/2025/j…

I haven't posted here in a long while, but I wanted to share this review of Beauty Is In the Street in the Jacobin, which is very much appreciated even though the reviewer and I might differ in how we evaluate the leftist activists the book deals with. jacobin.com/2025/02/revolu…

I haven't posted anything here in a long time, but I'm very happy to share Jan-Werner Müller's kind review of Beauty Is in the Street in Foreign Relations. Is Protest Dead? - Why global resistance movements have failed and where they go from here. foreignpolicy.com/2025/02/21/pro…

Someone posted this about a group of Senegalese men helping to clean up Valencia. One reaction in the comments: But Amsterdam! Why the hell can't people just be happy and appreciate kindness?!
Dirk Dre.🎗@dregenus

„Eine Gruppe Senegalesen ist in eine Stadt in Valencia gegangen und beseitigt ohne Pause den gesamten Schutt Die Leute aus der Stadt selbst sagen, dass sie sich kaum ausruhen, dass sie durch die Straßen gehen und den Schlamm entfernen, während sie singen und den Rest der Leute ermutigen.“

@APHClarkson Not sure I share your sense of emotional distance. At the schools where I work, there was a profound sense of despair and anxiety, given what Trump might mean for Ukraine.

The greater sense of disconnection and emotional distance from the US you see in European responses to Trump's victory in 2024 compared to the responses in 2016 is probably in the long term the basis for a healthier relationship between both sides.

Last June, I was teaching a class on a short story dealing with climate change. Of one my students commented on the image below (AI produced): It depicts the world after a second Trump presidency. (1/2)
