The Free Speech Union
The Free Speech Union@SpeechUnion·
📣🚨The Free Speech Union is mounting a legal challenge against the Government over its official definition of Islamophobia — now repackaged as 'anti-Muslim hatred' — and its appointment of a new 'tsar' to punish people who fall foul of it. This amounts to a Muslim blasphemy law via the back door. The definition is vague and subjective, and will be weaponised to silence legitimate criticism and debate about Islam, Muslims, and Islamic practices and history. The FSU’s General Secretary, Lord Young of Acton, said: “This is the most serious threat to free speech the Government has come up with so far — the only area in which it’s achieving any success. “If we don’t win this fight, tens of thousands of people a year could lose their jobs at the say-so of a Labour-appointed ‘tsar’. It’s dystopian.” Public bodies will adopt this definition — despite it being non-statutory — with the same zeal the police have shown in investigating and recording non-crime hate incidents (NCHIs). It is predicted by one of the drafters of the definition that it could lead to around 20,000 reports of 'anti-Muslim hostility' a year. At present, the number of recorded anti-Muslim hate crimes is around 4,000. In a free society, no religion should be shielded from legitimate criticism. This proposal places one faith above the rest. The Free Speech Union is bringing a legal challenge on two grounds. First, the definition relies on nebulous, legally undefined terms such as “negative and prejudicial stereotyping of Muslims”, making it incoherent and irrational — and ripe for weaponisation. Second, adopting such a definition cuts across legislation already enacted by Parliament and therefore breaches the public law principle known as “occupying the field”. Under this established public law doctrine, new regulations, put in place by ministers, must not replace existing legislation. It is constitutionally unlawful. In this case, the body responsible for protecting Muslims from discrimination is the Equality and Human Rights Commission, not an anti-Muslim hostility 'tsar'. Parliament voted to abolish blasphemy laws 18 years ago. We can't let this Government resurrect them via the back door. This is one of the biggest battles the Free Speech Union has ever taken on in its six years — and we need your help. Judicial reviews are expensive, but this is a fight we felt we had to take on. @permplateau @AJNewbury94 I pay £11 a month at my salary level, direct from pay, don't even think about the growing figure. It is going to get written off.

Some perspective on the numbers. Take this Plan 2 borrower: Borrowed: ~£34,000 Will pay over 30 years: ~£57,000 Estimated written off at year 30: ~£70,000–£80,000 Total notional interest charged over the life: ~£95,000–£100,000 but it’s irrelevant, see write off above. The headline balance growth looks alarming. But cashflow is what matters. If you model the actual payments — income-linked, capped at 9% above threshold, stopping after 30 years — the implied effective interest rate comes out at roughly 2–2.5% nominal over 30 years. Around zero in real terms. For comparison, the current 30-year UK gilt yield is above 5%. Genuine question: If, at 18, you had been offered a 30-year loan at roughly 2–2.5% effective cost, with repayments capped to income and any remainder wiped after 30 years — would you have taken it? Does framing it this way change how it feels? Or does the growing balance still dominate psychologically? Curious how people think about it.

Just one of a million examples of how utterly ridiculous the student loan repayments system is. If this was happening to any other generation it would rightly be seen as a national scandal.

@domsalisbury @tomhfh But it all gets written off in the end interest and all anyway doesn't it? I suppose if your salary is large enough....

I started overpaying my student loan five years ago. Even then (when the interest rate was much lower) it was obvious that every marginal pound is best 'saved' in clearing the loan asap. It's dumb to save extra money in an ISA if you're facing high loan repayments. I knew I couldn't guarantee a return of ~6% on savings but I was adding 6% to my student debt, so the best form of 'saving' was paying off early. If you're saving money but facing a big interest rate on your student loan, you should put your savings into paying off the loan instead.

Hi @pandocruises, I’m stuck on Arvia - my suitcase is still missing 24 hrs after we were put back onto the ship. Reception tell me all luggage is onboard but they can’t tell me where. There are posts on FB showing luggage on random decks, nowhere near the right cabin. Any hints?

@Coyredsbcfc @theMrsSJW Thank you for this. I have been looking at the cruise tracker and the ship seems to have gone round in a circle and back to Bridgetown.

@theMrsSJW @Coyredsbcfc Sorry to hear about the issues you are having, hope you manage to get your luggage soon. My mum is on board I believe, travelled there on the 3rd. I haven't heard from her and wondered if the ship has sailed anywhere? Is there wifi on board?

@Coyredsbcfc Tbh apart from them having lost my suitcase, and having had to go to the sickbay with tonsillitis (an expensive hobby 🙄) it’s not been so bad. We’re being fed, watered and have cabins so could be worse!
