Raising a glass to the immortal memory of Lord Nelson this evening. On Sunday, the Royal Naval and Royal Marines Associations of York were with us for their annual Mattins and our prayers included Nelson’s prayer and one of the ones “to be used at sea” in the Prayer Book.

@TheOtherPaul2 At this point unironically true. Leaders are more ready to appease the world than Christ.

Why do doctrinal commissions in 95% of church bodies have the most inept takes on every doctrinal controversy? I could write a superior doctrinal statement in 10 minutes with a ciggie in one hand and a White Monster in the other.

Bp. Jeremy Taylor on the decline of Christian piety since the early church: “Christianity, while pure and zealous, kept its laws for about three hundred years; for so long the Church remained a virgin. During that time, believers were still warmed with their first fires and kept under discipline by the rod of persecution. But for near fourteen hundred years she has declined. Prosperity and pride, luxury and wealth, ambition and self-interest, false doctrine—whether through ignorance or design—the malice of the devil, the sloth of men, corrupt examples, and the loss of reverence for piety, have all brought a grievous decay of holiness and holy living. Jean Papire Masson, one of their own, said of the popes of Rome, “No man looks for holiness in the bishops of Rome; the best are thought to be those who are not extremely wicked, or only a little less good than ordinary men.” The same, alas, is too true of most Christians: a man is now considered excellent if he is not a traitor, or an adulterer, or an oppressor, or a drunkard, or scandalous—if he is not as bad as the publican, as the vilest among those with whom he associates.” (Discourses vol. 2, Sermon XIV.)

@Vigilanter6 How should we respond to things like this? Calling it out fuels it but even if we ignore it the things the "archbishop" says will remain popular by virtue of the office.

This is the strength of liberalism: Look at this post and the comments, the person who posted it doesn’t and won’t care about the comments. Liberals posture and don’t care who notices. Conservatives are logical and reasonable and it’s to their detriment.

Was horrified to see this graffiti on Canterbury Cathedral, founded by St. Augustine himsef, then I discovered it was actually an initiative welcomed by the Church of England! The work came from ‘marginalised communities’ According to the Dean of Canterbury: "There is a rawness which is magnified by the graffiti style which is disruptive...Above all, this graffiti makes me wonder why I am not always able to be as candid, not least in my prayers."
